Welcome to Alum Rock Park

This is a trail based in Diablo Range foothills east of San Jose. The hike I completed is called Eagle Rock Loop. The top of the hike reveals a beautiful view of the city.

Trail Overview

Distance : 2.6 Miles

Elevation Gain: 498 ft

Time: 1-1.5 hours

Trailhead: Eagle Rock Loop

Trail Surface: Dry , rocky, paved for hiking

Quality Control

To keep the park clean, there are several trashcans in various recreational spots. For example, there are two spots, each next to the parking lots, with bathroom facilities and more trashcans. There was no litter visible and the  trail itself was contained very well.

Wildlife

I saw condors at the very top, where this picture was taken, a total of 3 circling. I saw many small lizards and dragon flies. In the more moist areas (near the lakes, under trees) there were many small bugs flying around.

Maintenance

This is a very common/popular hike for the Bay Area community. It's rare that you wont encounter one or two people on your hike. There are two free parking lots that are available to the public, however the first lot fills up quickly. There are sites you can barbecue with benches for sitting and hosting groups.

This trail takes you into the hills of San Jose . Right off of 680,  you drive roughly 5-10 minutes through a residential neighborhood, which leads you straight to Alum Rock Park. It is usually quite warm in San Jose, however because the first half of the hike starts off under tree's and alongside a river, it is casually cool.
